Despite the fact that our dog Nonna slumbers on 520 thread count cotton percale sheets spooning me nightly, she still manages to require a bed in our bedroom, kitchen, and living room (not including her luxe crate). The girl’s gotta lounge. Before anyone spends $2,650+ to get a good-looking dog bed, I’m sharing what I own and a few more styles that have caught my eye recently.
Nickey Kehoe’s Irish Sheep Wool Pet Bed
Cozy, pretty, and surprisingly durable, I opted for this piece in our primary bedroom (seen in situ at the bottom of this post). It blends seamlessly with our carpet like a layering rug.
Spotted on our kitchen floor in my last post, this classic country number is giving Balmoral. I debated if this bed was too sporty for my taste, but it has stood the test of time and Nonna along with both of our kids love to flop here.
Upholstery-Coordinating Floor Pillow
Back in the day, we made St. Frank pillows in a 30x30 inch size for the floor. I have one of these in our living room in a fabric that matches the upholstery of a chair also in that room (like the Barbour, this bed can be seen in my last post). Get the vibe with my talented friend Rebecca Atwood’s made-to-order pillow program. The risk of this move is that it’s not as easy to clean because it’s not specifically made for pets [that said, is it gross to admit that in nearly 6 years I have dry cleaned ours once and it looks and smells fine?].
Pendleton’s Glacier National Park Pet Bed — Napper
This is the exact bed I imagine purchasing should a) Nonna ever agree to sleep in our son’s room as he so desperately hopes or b) I ever agree to my husband’s Maine cabin fantasy. Both seem pretty unlikely, but the cushion is cute.
Ghanaian Handmade Basket
For my fellow boho girlies, this is an ethically made nest for a smaller breed than my own. I’ve found a range of colors and patterns on numerous sites, but this (pictured) and that are my current favorite. Note that you will additionally need to purchase a cushion; I recommend searching for a compatible insert on Amazon and wrapping it in a thick, washable blanket.
2.8 Design for Dog’s Henri Dog Bed
I like this piece for a more structured bed with a modern profile. The cream boucle wool finish is my personal favorite, but for a more masculine home or a shedding dog with a dark coat, perhaps the charcoal jute.
Hastshilp’s Rattan Dog Beds
Looking for a formal piece of furniture? I love this (pictured) and that which seem to be available in sizes for larger breeds unlike other rattan styles that have crossed my path. This is another BYO cushion situation, but perhaps an easier fix than the Ghanaian basket given the rectangular shape.
House of Braur’s Harris Tweed Dog Beds
For the Barbour hunting castle vibe, but more dressed up, this square style is so smart [future upgrade for Nonna, perhaps?]. Or if you prefer the unconfined floor pillow construction, their dog duvet is a nice option.
Unbeknownst to me, the LA-based women’s fashion brand has a line of pet and pet-inspired products including a dog bed that reads ‘I fly private.’ What gives me paws [ba-dum ching!]: I wonder how the leather fares with wear.
I hesitate to include this on the list because while I own it, I do mind it lying around the house TBH. In the world of functional dog crates, this is the most attractive one I could find. Do I love looking at it in my more formal and space-constrained Manhattan apartment? No. If anyone has a better solution, please drop it in the comments!
Congratulations on making it to the end of this post and the entire month of January, 2025! I kept it light this evening because it’s ruff ruff ruff out there right now. Amen somebody? Goodnight and good luck.
